LUXURY INDUSTRY
The origin of the term "luxury" can be traced back to its Latin root, Luxus, which denotes a luminous and brilliant creation. The concept of luxury has evolved over time and is now associated with a state of refined living. Luxury is an industry that remains resilient to economic downturns, as evidenced by the success of companies such as LVMH, Rolls Royce, Luxury Hotels and Villas, Gastronomy, and Travel. However, what constitutes luxury? Conventionally, it is associated with materiality, opulence, and exorbitant prices. Coco Chanel offered a different perspective by stating that luxury is not the opposite of poverty, but that of vulgarity. For the Escoffier Institute, luxury is an elegant way of life, a refined habit or a lexical grammar of sophisticated conduct.
